Chapter 9

Every Lifetime Ends Here

Sometimes the past returns not to haunt us, but to teach us how to love differently.

Every Lifetime Ends Here
For the next three days, neither Arjun nor Meera could think about anything else.
The reason.
The missing piece.
The truth hidden behind every separation.
It followed them everywhere.
During meetings.
During meals.
Even in sleep.
Especially in sleep.
Because the dreams had changed.
They were becoming clearer.
Longer.
More detailed.
As though something inside them had finally decided they were ready to know.
Or perhaps...
ready to suffer.
On the fourth night, Arjun had the most vivid dream of his life.
He found himself standing inside an old church.
Sunlight poured through stained-glass windows.
Rows of wooden benches stretched before him.
Flowers decorated every corner.
Soft music echoed through the hall.
The atmosphere felt joyful.
Hopeful.
Alive.
At the far end of the aisle stood Meera.
Not the Meera he knew now.
Yet undeniably her.
She wore a simple white dress.
Her eyes sparkled with happiness.
The kind of happiness people spend their entire lives searching for.
And beside her stood him.
Another version of him.
Another lifetime.
Another chance.
The dream moved forward.
Like a film.
The wedding was beautiful.
Simple.
Filled with laughter.
Friends.
Family.
Love.
The young couple looked unstoppable.
The kind of people everyone secretly envies.
The kind of people who seem destined to grow old together.
Then the dream shifted.
Weeks passed.
Months passed.
Years passed.
Arjun watched helplessly as their life unfolded.
He saw shared breakfasts.
Late-night conversations.
Arguments that ended in laughter.
Small traditions.
Ordinary moments.
The kind of moments that become extraordinary only after they're gone.
For the first time, he witnessed an entire lifetime.
Not fragments.
Not memories.
An entire story.
And it was beautiful.
Which made what came next unbearable.
One rainy evening, the young man received a phone call.
Everything changed after that.
The happiness disappeared.
The warmth vanished.
Fear entered their lives.
Suddenly.
Violently.
Without warning.
The dream skipped forward.
Hospitals.
Doctors.
Reports.
Tears.
Desperate hope.
Crushing disappointment.
Again and again.
Arjun felt his stomach twist.
No.
Please no.
Deep inside, he already knew.
The young woman was sick.
Terminally sick.
The realization struck him like a knife.
Because he remembered the feeling.
The helplessness.
The terror.
The desperation of watching someone you love slip away.
The dream continued.
Months became shorter.
Smiles became harder.
The young man spent every waking moment trying to save her.
Trying to bargain with fate.
Trying to rewrite an ending that refused to change.
But fate remained unmoved.
The final scene arrived.
A hospital room.
Moonlight through a window.
Machines humming softly.
Silence.
The young woman lay weakly upon the bed.
The young man sat beside her.
Holding her hand.
Trying not to cry.
Failing.
Then she smiled.
Even then.
Even there.
She smiled.
"Don't."
His voice broke.
"Please don't talk like this."
She squeezed his hand weakly.
"You know..."
A tear escaped her eye.
"I always wondered if we'd find each other again."
The young man lowered his head.
Unable to look at her.
Unable to imagine a world without her.
Then she whispered something that shattered Arjun completely.
"If there is another life..."
Her breathing faltered.
"...find me sooner."
The dream ended.
Arjun woke up gasping.
His pillow soaked with tears.
His chest felt crushed.
As though the grief belonged to him.
Because it did.
Somewhere.
Somewhen.
It had.
Minutes later, his phone rang.
Meera.
He answered immediately.
Neither said hello.
Neither needed to.
"You saw it."
Her voice trembled.
"Yes."
She was crying.
"So did I."
Silence.
The terrible kind.
The kind born from shared heartbreak.
Finally, Meera whispered:
"It wasn't the only one."
Arjun sat upright.
"What?"
"I remembered another lifetime."
His pulse quickened.
"What happened?"
The answer came slowly.
Almost reluctantly.
"A war."
Arjun closed his eyes.
Immediately, images flooded his mind.
A battlefield.
Smoke.
Chaos.
Gunfire.
Fear.
Another lifetime.
Another separation.
Then another memory surfaced.
A ship.
A storm.
A drowning.
Another.
A train accident.
Another.
A pandemic.
Another.
A fire.
Another.
Distance.
Another.
Loss.
Another.
Death.
Always death.
Always separation.
Always before their story could finish.
Arjun suddenly understood something horrifying.
It wasn't one tragedy.
It was dozens.
Lifetime after lifetime.
Century after century.
The details changed.
The ending never did.
The next morning, they met at the beach.
Neither cared about work.
Neither cared about responsibilities.
Some truths demanded immediate attention.
The ocean looked gray beneath the cloudy sky.
The wind felt colder than usual.
They walked in silence.
Finally, Meera stopped.
"What if this keeps happening?"
Arjun looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"What if this lifetime ends the same way?"
The question struck him harder than any memory.
Because for the first time...
the danger wasn't in the past.
It was in the future.
Neither had considered that possibility seriously before.
Not really.
They had been so focused on understanding previous lives that they had forgotten something important.
This life wasn't over yet.
Its ending remained unwritten.
And perhaps...
not all endings were happy.
For several moments, neither spoke.
The waves crashed gently against the shore.
Children played in the distance.
Life continued around them.
Then Meera asked the question both feared.
"What if we're remembering these lives for a reason?"
Arjun frowned.
"What reason?"
Her eyes met his.
And suddenly he understood.
A warning.
Not a memory.
A warning.
As though every previous version of themselves had been trying to send a message forward through time.
Trying to save them.
Trying to prevent something.
The realization sent chills through both of them.
Because if that was true...
then somewhere in all those forgotten memories...
there existed one lifetime unlike the others.
The first lifetime.
The one where everything began.
The one containing the original promise.
And the original tragedy.
The one lifetime neither of them had remembered.
Yet.
As they stood beside the ocean, watching waves disappear into the horizon, both felt the same thing.
The answers were close now.
Painfully close.
And when they finally discovered the truth...
nothing would ever be the same again.
